Is OnePlus going to release an Android Tablet New teaser seems to suggest so

by
January 28, 2023 at 01:40PM

After being in the Android phone market for almost a decade, OnePlus is now venturing into the tablet market. A teaser on the company's website reveals a green tablet with a prominent rear-facing camera. OnePlus has an event scheduled for February 7th, where it is expected to unveil the new OnePlus 11 and OnePlus Buds Pro 2, but the "OnePlus Pad" may also make an appearance as per TechRadar. The teaser shows an aluminium-framed tablet with narrow bezels around the screen and a small front-facing camera above the screen, but no further details are available on the hardware or screen size.

OnePlus Tablet, tablets

What does the OnePlus Pad teaser indicate?

The teaser for the upcoming "OnePlus Pad" suggests that the tablet will have a smooth, high-performance display. The tagline in the promotional image, "smooth without equal," could be referring to the refresh rate or internal specifications. As OnePlus is known for incorporating the latest technology, it's possible that the tablet will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, similar to the expected hardware in the OnePlus 11 phone. This would make it a noteworthy competitor in the tablet market, as Samsung's high-end tablet lineup is not expected to be updated until later in the year.

OnePlus Tablet, tablets

Most OEMs have left the tablet market

For years, many Android OEMs have been slowly leaving the tablet market as Google neglected to focus on larger form factors. Currently, only Samsung and Amazon offer notable tablet options, with Samsung providing powerful, yet costly tablets and Amazon catering to the lower-end market. However, the market for tablets is in need of something in between, and the OnePlus Pad could be the solution.

This is also a good time for OnePlus to take the leap into the tablet market as Google has begun to pay attention to larger-format Android again. With the recent updates to Android, such as Android 12 and 13, which added essential multitasking and UI features for tablets and foldable, OnePlus can create a tablet without having to develop its own interface from scratch. Although Android still has a way to go to catch up to iPadOS, it has certainly improved in the past year.

A collector paid 39,000 for a 15-year-old iPhone

by
October 18, 2022 at 04:15PM

Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone in 2007, and Apple sold millions of units after the launch. The vintage phone sold on the weekend was advertised as “exceptional condition,” with “pristine” labels under the plastic seal and free of aftermarket stickers on the box. The 15-year-old phone had an 8GB storage capacity and a 2-megapixel camera. For comparison, the base variant of the newly launched iPhone 14 series has a 128GB storage capacity and features a 12-megapixel primary camera with an ultra-wide lens. The collector who topped the bidding paid $39,339.60 for a factory-sealed model of the first-edition iPhone.

LCG Auctions founder Mark Montero said, “We expected the bidding for this item to be fervent, and it did not disappoint as a handful of avid and sophisticated collectors drove the price from just over $10,000 on Sunday afternoon to this record-setting amount by Sunday night. We congratulate the winners, our consignors, and all of the bidders for making this one of the most active auctions in our history.” LCG Auctions sold the 8GB smartphone on Sunday for five figures, i.e., $39,000. The opening bid started at $2,500 but saw a significant price climb. The device retailed for $599 in 2007. In 2022, after inflation, the phone retailed at $852.

Google Search has a special Diwali Surprise for its Indian Users

by
October 18, 2022 at 04:00PM

The search engine giant Google has brought a special Diwali surprise ahead of the Festival of Lights. The tweet from the official account, @GoogleIndia, read “Just here to say search Diwali for a surprise.”

If you type “Diwali” into the Google search bar and then click the Search button, a short descriptive text with information on the festival celebration will appear on your screen. The Diya (earthen lamp) symbol will display on the right on mobile devices, while on the desktop, it will display to the left “Diwali” after the search loads. Once you tap this lamp, it comes to life, but that’s not all that Google offers. You must click or tap on the lamp to access the Easter egg.

A new animation added by Google

A total of eight additional lamps of different sizes will appear on the screen simultaneously as the Diya begins to move. You can move the lamp using the mouse on a desktop computer or laptop, and you can use your finger on a mobile phone. You can light all the lamps, which will display a blinking light all around the Diyas on the screen, and appears like a constellation made up of burning lamps.

The easter egg features engaging animation, and it also serves as a symbol of Google’s efforts to make the Search website for India more attractive to users for their festive season. There is no official date for when Google will remove this new animation for Diwali 2022 search. However, the search engine will likely continue to use it in the future, even after the festival has finished.

Microsofts HoloLens Goggles causes discomfort to US Soldiers during field test

by
October 14, 2022 at 04:17PM

The U.S. soldiers in their latest field test suffered "mission-affecting physical impairments", including headaches, eyestrain and nausea while using Microsoft's new Army goggles, HoloLens, as per the summarized report by Pentagon. Nickolas Guertin, director of Operation Test and Evaluation, said, "More than 80% of the soldiers experienced discomfort and had symptoms after less than three hours of using the customized goggles."

The Army outlined problems in the testing in May and June in a 79-page report this month, mentioned that the system was experiencing too many essential functions failures, and marked it "Controlled Unclassified Information" to prevent public distribution.

Despite the device's flaws, Guertin has recommended that the Army prioritize improvements before widespread deployment to reduce the physical discomfort of users. He added improvements to the goggle's low-light sensors, display clarity, field of vision and poor reliability of some essential functions..

Microsoft's Integrated Visual Augmentation System, or IVAS, is expected to provide a heads-up display similar to that of the fighter pilots for U.S. ground forces. It will allow commanders to project information onto a visor in front of a soldier's face and include night vision. The Army will likely spend $21.9 billion over a decade on goggles, spare parts and support services.

The latest version enhanced navigation and coordination of unit movements as reported by the leaders and the soldiers. Moreover, the mean time between the failures that render the whole system inoperable has improved in the latest model.

New Meta VR headset set to launch in Oct: CEO

by
August 26, 2022 at 03:52PM

San Francisco, Aug 26 (IANS) Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has confirmed that the tech giant's upcoming virtual reality (VR) headset will arrive this year in October.

According to Zuckerberg's statements on Joe Rogan's podcast, the headset would probably launch around the company's annual Connect event, reports The Verge.

"For the next device that's coming out in October, there are a few big features," Zuckerberg was quoted as saying.

He proceeded to describe new social options that would be enabled by eye and facial tracking, the report said.

"The ability to now have kind of eye contact in virtual reality," Zuckerberg said as part of the feature list.

"Have your face be tracked so that way your avatar -- it is not just this still thing, but if you smile or if you frown or if you pout, or whatever your expression is, have that translate in real-time to your avatar," he added.

The headset, most likely codenamed "Project Cambria", is supposed to be "significantly" more expensive than the existing Quest, which recently got a price hike to $399.

As per the report, the tech giant had previously stated that the device will be released sometime this year.

Apple enables Face ID with Mask and Universal Control in new Beta Updates

by
January 28, 2022 at 05:59PM

Apple has finally added a much-awaited feature to the iOS 15.4 Beta and iPad OS 15.4 Beta updates that have started rolling out for developers. iPhone users will be able to unlock using Face ID even with a mask put on. iPadOS and MacOS, on the other hand, will get Universal control that lets users type with Mac Keyboards on iPad simply by placing the iPad next to their Mac PCs.

Use FaceID with a Mask

After the update, users will not need an Apple Watch paired with the phone for the unlocking to work. In fact, they will also be able to use Apple Pay, use Autofill in Safari browser, and authenticate third-party app logins while keeping their face masks.

Apple does caution users that the Face ID will be “most accurate” with full face recognition. With the “Use FaceID with a Mask” option enabled, your iPhone will recognize “unique features around the eye area”.     On the downside, this FaceID with Mask option will only be available for iPhone 12 and later. So, iPhone X and iPhone 11 users will have to remain content with FaceID with Apple Watch feature for now which is only limited to unlocking the phone.

iOS 15.4 Beta is now available only for developers and is an official release for masses is expected later in spring.

Universal Control

Universal Control was first announced at WWDC in June 2021. As stated above, the feature allows users to use a single keyboard and mouse for their Mac and iPad (or both) in close proximity. The option is reportedly enabled by default with iPadOS 15.4. The feature uses Apple continuity to establish a connection between the two devices and both should have the same Apple ID logged in.

There is no official word on when Apple will push out the official iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 update, but we can expect the feature to be available this spring.

New studio called SEE claims that it will start shooting movies and TV shows in space by 2024

by
January 21, 2022 at 04:54PM

It seems that shooting films on good old Earth is a little too passe. So what’s next? Well, start shooting films in space is the logical answer, of course. A company called Space Entertainment Enterprise has announced that it is going to launch the world’s first zero-gravity studio. The studio will include shooting space as well as a multi-purpose arena. Where this will be built is still up in the air (pun intended), as of now. Dubbed the SEE-1, the studio will have films, TV shows and such being shot there. So, if you’re a filmmaker who wants to shoot in low or zero gravity, SEE-1 is probably your best choice. In fact, the studio is actually co-producing Tom Cruise’s next film, which is set to be shot in space.

Space Studio

Space Entertainment Enterprise announces new studio in space

As we earlier reported, Tom Cruise had negotiated a deal with NASA to set his new film on the International Space Station. A tweet from NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine also confirmed the outrageous news. Cruise has just partnered with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and was actually looking at filming his next action-adventure in outer space. If this does happen, it will be the first time in history that a major feature film will be filmed in the cold emptiness of space. Details of the project are still kept tightly under wraps but one thing we do know is that the film will not be a part of the Mission: Impossible series. The actor is known for his daredevil attitude and insistence in performing his own stunts. Remember that Burj Khalifa sequence? Yeah, that was all Tom Cruise and not some stuntman. The guy is 57 years old and still a machine.

SEE-1 will be built by Axiom Space, a company that also received NASA’s approval to construct, design and build the International Space Station’s entertainment module. This could also contribute to the idea of Space Tourism in the near future. As a famous captain once said, “Space, the final frontier”. Well, it looks like it’s not going to the final frontier for very long.

Apple ARVR headset may be powered by 86W power adapter, could feature two chipsets: Report

by
January 11, 2022 at 09:49PM

Apple has been long rumored to be working on some type of AR/VR headset, and now it seems like we might have gotten some more information about it. A report by MacRumors, states that notable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the headset will use the same 96W power adapter that is used by the MacBook Pro. On top of this, Kuo also noted that the headset will offer “Mac-level” computing power. He said that the device will pack two processors, one 5nm chip and another 4nm chip. Both of these will be manufactured by TSMC.

Kuo also said that Apple’s headset will be two to three years ahead of competing products in terms of computing power. The headset is tipped to offer seamless switching between AR and VR modes.

Apple AR/VR could feature two chipsets

Back in December, Kuo said that Apple could release the headset at the end of 2022. He added that the headset could operate without being paired with an iPhone and will support a wide range of different apps. It could also come with Mc-level computing power, which means that it could be as powerful as a proper PC. He also stated that the headset will launch with two processors. He said, “The higher-end processor will have similar computing power as the M1 for Mac, whereas the lower-end processor will be in charge of sensor-related computing.”

While other manufacturers like HP, HTC, Acer and more have already released their take on AR/VR headsets. But they are usually quite large and bulky. Last month, Oppo unveiled its Air Glasses AR headset which was a sleeker take on AR headset design. We had a chance to check out an early version of Oppo’s Air Glasses back in 2019. You can learn more about that by clicking the link below.
