Worlds first humanoid robot factory from Agility Robotics set to open this year

by
September 22, 2023 at 10:40AM

Agility Robotics, creator of the bipedal robot Digit, has announced that the company is opening RoboFab– world’s first factory for humanoid robots– in Salem, Oregon this year with the capability to produce more than 10,000 robots per year.

“Initial construction of Agility’s 70,000 square foot robot factory began last year, and it is set to open later this year. Agility anticipates production capacity of hundreds of Digit robots in the first year, with the capability to scale to more than 10,000 robots per year,” the company said in a statement.

At full capacity, RoboFab will employ more than 500 workers in Salem, in addition to employees at Agility’s other locations. Digit will also work in the new factory, in a similar capacity to Agility's customer sites, moving, loading, and unloading totes.

“Digit is designed from the ground up to go where people go and do useful work, safely, in spaces designed for people. Because so many tasks are designed around human workflows, Digit’s human-centric design enables multi-purpose utility,” the company said.

Initial applications include bulk material handling within warehouses and distribution centres. With the opening of the new manufacturing facility, customers who are participating in the Agility Partner Program (APP) can expect delivery of the first Digits next year, with general market availability in 2025.

“The opening of our factory marks a pivotal moment in the history of robotics: the beginning of the mass production of commercial humanoid robots,” said Damion Shelton, Agility Robotics’ co-founder and CEO.

“We built Digit to solve difficult problems in today’s workforce like injuries, burnout, high turnover and unfillable labour gaps, with the ultimate vision of enabling humans to be more human,” Shelton added.

Agility Robotics COO Aindrea Campbell is leading the scaling of Agility’s manufacturing and corporate operations to meet the large commercial demand for Digit, including the launch of the new factory.

“By establishing RoboFab as a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub in Salem, Oregon, we are not only accelerating the development and deployment of advanced robotic systems, but also cultivating innovation and creating high-skilled job opportunities. With the capability to produce Digit at scale, we are poised to change the future of work for the better," said Campbell.

Google sued after Maps directed man to drive off a collapsed bridge

by
September 22, 2023 at 10:39AM

The family of a man from North Carolina who died after following Google Maps directions and driving his car off a collapsed bridge is suing the tech giant for negligence, claiming that the company knew about the collapse but did not update its navigation system.

The Associated Press reported that Philip Paxson, a medical device salesman and father of two, drowned September 30, 2022, after his Jeep Gladiator plunged into Snow Creek in Hickory, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday in Wake County Superior Court.

Also read: Google sued for location tracking practices in the US

Google Maps news

While Paxson was returning from his daughter's ninth birthday party through an unknown neighbourhood, Google Maps allegedly instructed him to cross a bridge that had collapsed nine years earlier and was never rebuilt.

Google Maps news

“Our girls ask how and why their daddy died, and I’m at a loss for words they can understand because, as an adult, I still can’t understand how those responsible for the GPS directions and the bridge could have acted with so little regard for human life,” Paxson’s wife, Alicia Paxson, said.

It was reported by state troopers that there were no barricades or warning signs along the washed-out road where Paxton's body was discovered in his flipped-over and partially submerged truck. According to the lawsuit, he had driven off an unsecured ledge and crashed around 20 feet below.

Google Maps is one of the most popular navigation apps worldwide. Millions of users rely upon it for everyday travel and directions. However, incidents like the case of Philip Paxson highlight the potential consequences of relying solely on digital navigation tools.

After this incident, users and the general public may likely become more cautious about trusting GPS systems entirely. This incident could lead to increased awareness about the importance of verifying routes and being cautious, especially in unfamiliar areas, and it may prompt Google and other navigation companies to prioritise regular updates and accuracy in their systems, as well as implement additional safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

Heres the list of new features coming on WhatsApp for iOS

by
September 22, 2023 at 10:38AM

Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working to bring a redesigned interface on iOS by introducing new icons. WhatsApp will likely introduce new icons for the settings section in a future update of the app, as per the report.

According to a report by a known WhatsApp tipster publication, WABetaInfo, the messaging platform is working on improving the interface of iOS by introducing new icons.

The new icons will likely enable users to experience a better modern interface, improving the visual appeal of the application.

It’s worth noting that WhatsApp is also planning to release redesigned icons in the chat info section in the future.

With the revamped interface, WhatsApp aims to offer a better modern and user-friendly experience.

“With the new design, WhatsApp is finally demonstrating its commitment to addressing user feedback and evolving the interface of the app. Users have been requesting for a revamped user interface for years, as the application had not received updates in this context for a considerable amount of time, potentially causing it to seem outdated when compared to competing apps,” the report said.

Recently, it was reported that the Meta-owned instant messaging platform had started testing a new video avatar calling feature. This feature is expected to allow users to replace themselves with avatars during video calls. Given that WhatsApp is owned by Meta, it's worth noting that Meta introduced the real-time avatar calling feature for Instagram and Messenger in July. Therefore, it's possible for WhatsApp to incorporate such a feature in the future. WhatsApp also reportedly started testing an automatic security code verification feature for end-to-end encryption. For this new feature, WhatsApp is expected to introduce a revamped encryption verification screen.

Alexa gets cool new features like Automatic Lightning, Map View & more

by
September 22, 2023 at 10:37AM

Amazon has announced new features for Alexa. The new features include Automatic Lightning, Map View and much more.

Below are the new features that Amazon announced for Alexa.

Automatic Lighting

Later this year, Alexa will be able to detect the brightness level and activity in a room, and intelligently decide to turn the lights on or off. So, you will no longer need to walk into a dark room and search for a light switch, or even ask Alexa to do it for you.

Users should look for motion and ambient light sensors that have the Works with Alexa (WWA) badge to enable this feature once available. Select Echo devices with motion and ambient light sensors will also support this feature soon, including the Echo Dot (5th Gen).

Also read: 5 key features of Amazon Echo Dot 5 launched in India

Alexa new features

Explore with Alexa

Explore with Alexa is a new conversational experience for Amazon Kids+ on Echo devices that combines entertaining facts and trivia questions to boost deeper curiosity and exploration. Soon, when kids ask Alexa a question about animals and nature, Alexa will respond with information adapted from trusted sources and encourage kids to keep exploring a topic.

Initiate routines in more than one way

Later this year, users will be able to initiate a single Routine in multiple ways. For example, users can initiate a Bedtime Routine that turns off all the lights, closes the blinds and begins playing sleep sounds when someone says “Alexa, goodnight” or every weekday at 10 p.m.

Top Connections

According to Amazon, calling friends and dropping in on household members

is a popular Alexa feature for staying in touch, so the company is making it even easier for users

to connect with those that matter most.

The Top Connections widget on Echo Show 15 allows users to easily see their favourite contacts and most frequently used devices within the household. Users can quickly initiate a call or drop-in with a single-tap. They will also be able to see birthday reminders. This will extend to Echo Show 5, 8, and 10 in the coming months.

Alexa Map View

Map View allows users to utilise compatible iOS devices to scan and create a digital map of their home’s floor plan and pin their connected devices to it. This lets users visualise their home at a glance, without needing to scroll through any device lists, remember device names, or open multiple apps.

Users can also use Map View to easily control their devices, like turning all the lights downstairs on and off in a single tap, or to check if the doors are locked after leaving home in a hurry. It will be available in the Alexa app later this year, and come to Echo Hub early next year.

Elon Musks Neuralink gains approval to recruit humans for brain-implant trial: Know more

by
September 20, 2023 at 01:52PM

Elon Musk’s neurotechnology company Neuralink has announced that it has received approval to start recruiting humans for its brain-implant trial.

“We are happy to announce that we’ve received approval from the reviewing independent institutional review board and our first hospital site to begin recruitment for our first-in-human clinical trial,” the company announced in an official blogpost on September 19, 2023.

Also read: Neuralink all set for human trials in 6 months, according to CEO Elon Musk

Neuralink

The PRIME Study (short for Precise Robotically Implanted Brain-Computer Interface) – an investigational medical device trial for the Neuralink’s fully-implantable, wireless brain-computer interface (BCI) – aims to evaluate the safety of the company’s implant (N1) and surgical robot (R1) and assess the initial functionality of Neuralink’s BCI for enabling people with paralysis to control external devices with their thoughts.

During the study, the R1 Robot will be used to surgically place the N1 Implant’s ultra-fine and flexible threads in a part of the brain that controls movement intention.

Once in place, the N1 Implant is cosmetically invisible and is intended to record and transmit brain signals wirelessly to an app that decodes movement intention.

Elon Musk

The initial goal of the company’s BCI is to grant people the ability to control a computer cursor or keyboard using their thoughts alone.

“The PRIME Study is being conducted under the investigational device exemption (IDE) awarded by the FDA in May 2023 and represents an important step in our mission to create a generalized brain interface to restore autonomy to those with unmet medical needs,” Neuralink said.

The company further mentioned that those who have quadriplegia due to cervical spinal cord injury or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may qualify.

According to a report by the Guardian, the company's announcement comes after months of receiving regulatory approval for a trial. Its prior animal testing is under scrutiny due to reports of trials causing unnecessary suffering.

by
September 18, 2023 at 04:17PM

OnePlus has finally confirmed its first budget tablet - The OnePlus Pad Go. The Go will succeed the OnePlus Pad which is a high-end tablet. The Chinese brand rolled out its first tablet in India on the 25th of April and is now set to drop another tablet in the country. The brand has confirmed the launch date of the upcoming OnePlus Pad Go as October 6th. Additionally, along with the launch announcement, the company has also revealed the first look of the tablet, which shows a lot of resemblance in design with its predecessor.

The OnePlus Pad Go shares a lot of design elements similar to the previously launched tablet. It will have a curved-edge design and a circular camera module right at the centre of the back. Next up, there are two different textures on the back, matte and glossy. OnePlus revealed the Pad Go in the ‘Twin Mint’ colour. This colour option is very similar to the one we have seen in the OnePlus Pad.

Google Tensor G4 wont be a big upgrade over Pixel 8s Tensor G3: Report

by
September 18, 2023 at 12:36PM

With the release of the Pixel 6, Google unveiled its first Tensor chipset, aiming to grow independent of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. Interestingly, these Tensor chips were developed in collaboration with Samsung and incorporate certain elements from Google, while drawing substantial inspiration from Samsung's Exynos chips. According to a recent report, this will remain the same, extending into the development of the forthcoming Tensor G3 and Tensor G4 chips.

According to a report by Android Authority, citing a “Google insider”, Tensor G4 in the Google Pixel 9 won’t be a very big upgrade.

While Tensor G3 is known as “Zuma,” Tensor G4 is codenamed “Zuma Pro,” according to the report.

Google's minot Tensor G4 chip upgrade and beyond

The new chip is expected to still be semi-custom and co-designed with Samsung. Also, it will likely be a minor upgrade than initially planned. This is similar to how Tensor G2 was a small update over the original Tensor.

The report further mentioned that Google has also started working on the next-generation fully-custom Tensor chip codename “Laguna Beach” for 2025 Pixels, and the development board for this chip is codenamed “Deepspace.”

Google initially had plans to introduce its 2024 Pixel series featuring a "fully custom" Tensor SoC, codenamed "Redondo," built using a TSMC process node. However, due to a missed deadline, the chip arrived too late for inclusion in the 2024 Pixel 9 series.

Earlier, it was rumoured that the upcoming Tensor G3 chipset won’t have as good a performance as its other flagship counterparts. This could be a potential deal breaker, if true. But that’s not all, rumours also suggested that this Google chip will be coming with top notch AI under the hood, which would allow Google to still showcase some never-before-seen applications on the Pixel 8 smartphone later this year – and save its reputation.

OnePlus Pad Go first look: OnePkus India teases new tablet to launch soon

by
September 15, 2023 at 02:53PM

For a long time now, OnePlus has been expected to launch a new affordable tablet, the OnePlus Pad Go. The Pad Go will be the successor of the OnePlus Pad, which launched in April in India. The OnePlus Pad is a high-end tablet that packs specifications such as MediaTek Dimensity 9000, 144Hz display, and much more. The OnePlus Pad was launched in India at a price of ₹37,999. It is no surprise that the Chinese brand wants to provide its fans with an affordable tablet as well.

OnePlus India has shared a line sketch poster of a tablet on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption, “All Play, All Day coming soon.” Interestingly, the brand did not mention the product's name in the post but invited users to make their guesses.

This post hints at three key points: firstly, that OnePlus is gearing up to launch a new tablet, which is likely to be the Pad Go, and secondly, the 'All Play, All Day' quote hints at a device with a long-lasting battery. The third key point is the design; it appears that the OnePlus Pad Go may feature a familiar design reminiscent of its predecessor, with a circular camera module positioned in the center on the back.  Notably, the OnePlus India website also features a dedicated microsite that echoes the message from the social media post.

A few days ago, Yogesh Brar collaborated with MySmartPrice and tipped the launch timeline of the OnePlus Pad Go. The tipster said that OnePlus could roll out the Pad Go next year in January, most likely with the OnePlus 12 series. However, OnePlus is claiming to launch a new tablet soon and January 2024 is not soon at all. So either this leak could be wrong or OnePlus might launch some other tablet before January.

As for the specifications, the company has not revealed any specifications about the OnePlus Pad Go and neither the leaks do. However, it is expected to launch around the price range of ₹20,000. You have to wait a little longer to know more about this new tablet, until then stay tuned.

3 things that make the new iPhone 15 look old and dated

by
September 13, 2023 at 05:09PM

With the all-new Apple iPhone 15 series, some people are getting really excited, while others remain indifferent. Two factors elevate the excitement of Apple fans: the inclusion of a 48-megapixel primary camera and the Dynamic Island in the standard models this year. These features were first introduced in the Apple iPhone 14 Pro models and were exclusive to those smartphones until now. However, for some, this isn't enough for a ₹79,900 smartphone.

Apple's primary competitor, Samsung, launched the Galaxy S23 series in February. The standard model, Galaxy S23, launched at ₹74,999 and offers more than the iPhone 15. For instance, Samsung boasts a 120Hz refresh rate display, whereas Apple sticks with a 60Hz display in its latest iPhone 15 series. Furthermore, brands like iQOO and Infinix offer 144Hz displays in smartphones that cost considerably less than the iPhone 15.

 iPhone 15

Many people purchase iPhones for their exceptional cameras, but it's a disappointment for those interested in professional photography. Last year, with the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, Apple introduced the ProRes mode for videos and ProRAW mode for pictures, catering to professional photographers. Unfortunately, these features are only available in the Pro models, whereas Samsung, as an Android smartphone, offers a Pro mode for professional photography with the Samsung Galaxy S23.

If you still wish to use Pro mode on iPhones' standard smartphones, you can download third-party apps such as Adobe Lightroom. However, spending thousands of rupees on a smartphone just to use Pro mode in third-party applications doesn't seem justified to me.

One more feature Apple should consider for its iPhone series is Fast Charging. Many of us had anticipated fast-charging support this year due to the rumoured USB Type-C port. However, even this year, Apple did not announce fast-charging support in its iPhone 15 series. Meanwhile, Chinese brands offer up to 120-watt fast charging support in their mid-range smartphones.

iPhone 15 Pros new Action Button can do lots of cool stuff: Full list inside

by
September 13, 2023 at 03:41PM

The wait is over and Apple has dropped the most awaited iPhone 15 series. The new iPhone 15 series comes with a lot of new features including design, hardware, and software as well. Among these features, Apple has introduced a new ‘Action Button’ in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Action Button had long been speculated for the iPhone 15 series. This new button has switched the signature mute slider that’s been there in iPhones since 2007. The Action Button not only mutes the smartphones but can do much more. Let’s check out its features.

The Action Button here is a programmable button that iPhones will use for shortcuts. The Action Button can be used by tapping it once and holding it. That means, at once, you can use it for two commands of one feature. At default, it is just a muting button, which can be used to mute and unmute the iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max. But you can customise the Action Button with more shortcuts.

The inclusion of the Type-C port has enabled the iPhone 15 series to deliver fast charging capabilities, a highly anticipated feature for users this year.

The new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models come with a back glass that is made stronger using a optimised dual-ion exchange method and then polished with tiny nanocrystalline particles. It's also etched to give it a luxurious, textured matte finish. The aerospace-grade aluminum enclosure now has a contoured edge that will feel great in your hand. The front cover, made of Ceramic Shield, is extremely durable. The iPhone 15 and iPhone Plus model are also designed to be water and dust-resistant.

According to Apple, the Super Retina XDR display is great for watching content, streaming Apple Fitness+ workouts, and playing games. The new models' peak HDR brightness now reaches up to 1600 nits so HDR photos and videos look better than ever. Also, peak outdoor brightness reaches up to 2000 nits, twice as bright as the previous generation.

iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus vs iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus: Performance

The new Apple iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models are equppied with the fast and efficient A16 Bionic chipset. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus come in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage capacities. Both of these smartphones run on the latest iOS 17. The 6-core CPU is faster and more power-efficient, with two high-performance and four high-efficiency cores. The 5-core GPU has 50% more memory bandwidth for delivering smoother graphics, and a new 16-core Neural Engine speeds up machine learning while maintaining strong privacy and security with the Secure Enclave.

iPhones will have Qualcomm 5G modems until 2026 at least

by
September 12, 2023 at 12:42PM

Chip-maker Qualcomm has announced that it has signed a new 3-year agreement with Apple to supply 5G modems for iPhones.

In a press release on September 11, 2023, Qualcomm Technologies announced that it has entered into an agreement with Apple Inc. to supply Snapdragon 5G Modem‑RF Systems for smartphone launches in 2024, 2025 and 2026.

“This agreement reinforces Qualcomm’s track record of sustained leadership across 5G technologies and products,” the chip-maker said.

According to a report by CNBC, Wall Street analysts and Qualcomm officials had previously said that they expected Apple to use an internally developed 5G modem starting next year.

The report further mentioned that Qualcomm currently provides Apple with 5G modems for iPhones, but Apple has been working to make its own modems in order to switch from  Qualcomm-made chips. In 2019, Apple purchased Intel’s smartphone modem division to develop its own modem. However, according to analysts, it will likely be difficult for the iPhone-maker to simply switch from Qualcomm’s chips due to their complexity.

Qualcomm expects to only provide 20% of the modems required for Apple's 2026 smartphone launch, indicating that it still believes that Apple business will eventually decline. Also, a Qualcomm official said that the company was not updating its guidance to take into account the Apple sales, as per the report.

Meanwhile, Apple is all set to host its Wonderlust event tonight (September 12, 2023) at 10:30 pm Indian Standard Time (IST). The tech giant is preparing to make some major announcements at this event. Speculation and leaks have been circulating about the upcoming iPhone models. In addition to the anticipated iPhone 15 lineup, Apple is also expected to introduce the successor of the Watch Series 8, along with several other products. You can watch the live stream of this event on Apple’s official website or YouTube channel at 10:30 pm. You will also be able to watch the event using your Apple TV app.
