32 brands, including Acer, HP, Lenovo, and Dell, sign up to make laptops in India

August 31, 2023 at 02:00PM

After the recent restrictions that the Indian government imposed on the imports of laptops, servers, and other electronic goods listed under HSN 8741 earlier this month, it seems that manufacturers’ plans to make the imported goods in India are in motion. In a recent press conference, Ashwini Vaishnaw, who holds the office of Electronics & Information Technology Minister, revealed that 32 companies have applied to make laptops locally in India.

Laptop import restrictions – What happened?

Government of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry on August 3 published a notification stating that the import of goods listed under HSN 8741, including laptops, AIOs, servers, and ultra-small form factor computers in India, would be restricted. All the manufacturers would be required to have a license allowing them to import the goods that were moved from the “Free” category of imported goods to “Restricted”.

At the time, we had reached out to brands like Dell and Acer for comments, and they were confident in their ability to keep their supply chains running smoothly as they had manufacturing plants already set up in the country. While Acer and Dell are brands that already were manufacturing in India, there were several others that had been importing their goods into the country. Recently, there was a push back from these brands as well. However, the government, in their latest directive, had said that the restrictions would come into effect starting November 1, 2023.

HP and Lenovo are amongst the brands that will manufacture in India

On the back of this announcement comes the media briefing, where Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed that  32 companies have already signed up for manufacturing their goods in India. As reported by Business Today, in the conference, he said – "Overwhelming response received for the production of laptops and PCs under the hardware Production Linked Incentive Scheme (PLI) scheme. Companies that will be manufacturing laptops include HP India, Dell, Acer, Lenovo, Thomson and others. Servers will be made by HP Enterprises."

With this news coming through, one thing that I had mentioned in my earlier coverage of these restrictions seems to be on the horizon – Reduced prices of the now-restricted goods. In the coming months, when we have a stabilised output from these manufacturing units that brands will be putting up in India, the prices of laptops and other goods should go down. I will leave the cost analysis for the experts to figure out, but from what limited knowledge I have about the matter, reduced pricing of laptops and tablets could be closer than ever! All we can do now is wait and watch

Your next Apple Watch could be 3D printed, as per reports

August 31, 2023 at 01:53PM

There have been rumours floating around about Apple considering 3D printing as a part of its product design and manufacturing process. Now, we have a report that details how Apple will implement this change.

The report comes courtesy of Mark Gurman at Bloomberg who says that Apple will start 3D printing certain models of the upcoming Apple Watch Series 9 as a test run before implementing it for other products.

Also read: Apple Watch X to come with blood pressure monitor: When is it launching?

Gurman cited his sources to be “people with knowledge of the matter”, so take this news with a grain of salt since it hasn’t been confirmed by Apple itself.

Gurman says that Apple would be using 3D printers to manufacture the chassis of the non-Ultra Apple Watch models. This would save Apple considerable time and resources since they wouldn’t need to cut large metal slabs to create individual parts of the watches. It could also have a positive impact on the environment as less overall material would be needed to build the watches.

Apple to 3D print certain models of upcoming Watch Series 9

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding the upcoming launches of Apple products in the company’s September ‘Wanderlust’ event. The company is expected to launch the new iPhone 15 series as well as the Apple Watch Series 9 lineup.

Gurman from Bloomberg shared that this process has been under development for at least three years now, and the company will only test this process out on certain models of the upcoming watches. However, the company will only fully switch over to this new manufacturing technique once they have confirmed its success with the upcoming Watch 9 Series.

Also read: Apple patent hints at smart ring in near future: Would the iPhone maker launch a smart ring?

The process Apple will use is called binder jetting. In this process, the print is made “with a powdered substance, which afterward goes through a process called sintering”. Heat and pressure is then used to squeeze down the material into something that feels and looks like traditional steel.

Apple is set to announce the new Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 on September 12, so we won’t have to wait much longer to see if the speculation holds any merit.

Indian PC market shrunk by over 15 percent, Acer the only brand that grew

August 19, 2023 at 10:00AM

In India, the regular PC market seems to face problems. They sent out 3.2 million computers in the second part of this year. This was a little more than before, but compared to the same time last year, it went down by a lot (15.3% less). This information comes from a group called International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide Quarterly Personal Computing Device Tracker.

In this quarter, all types of computer products didn't sell as well as they did the year before. Computers such as notebooks sold 18.5% less, and the desktops sold 7.0% less compared to last year. Both regular people and businesses didn't buy as many computers, with a 17.0% drop for regular people and 13.8% for businesses.

Also read: Lenovo strengthens Make In India plans

The PCs sold for schools and the government did better, but businesses had a hard time. Some states like Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu helped schools get more computers, and that made the school computer market grow by 43.7%. The government also increased the PC market by 8.2%, because they needed them for court orders.

The high-end laptops, priced over ₹80,000, faced a downfall by 30.7%. But they did better in the later part of the year, going up by 39.0% compared to the previous three months.

However, the top 5 brands in India are HP Inc, Lenovo, Dell Technologies, Asus, and Acer Group. All of these companies have faced a downfall in their market share in 2Q23 compared to last year’s (2Q22) position, except Acer Group, according to IDC. Acer Group has seen a positive growth in its market share this year.

Also read: Laptop import ban explained: Do you need to worry about your next purchase?

Acer Group has gained 11.4% in 2Q23 market share, whereas last year’s score was 8.9%. This company has got a 8.2% positive YoY growth in the total market.

Next up, there’s Asus, which secured 7.2% 2Q23 market share. A slight increase from last year. But it faced a 0.5% decline in 2Q23 YoY growth.

HP Inc. has faced a 14.4% loss in 2Q23 YoY growth and secured 31.1% 2Q23 market share. A slight increase here as well, 30.8% in 2Q22 market share.

Lenovo failed to achieve positive growth as it faced a 30.2% decline in 2Q23 YoY. Its 2Q22’s market share was 19.6%, whereas this year it was only 16.2%.

Dell Technologies has done the worst of them all, as it faced a 39.9% decline in 2Q23 YoY. Its 2Q22’s market share was 21.6%, whereas this year it was only 15.3%.

Laptop import ban explained: Do you need to worry about your next purchase

August 03, 2023 at 05:04PM

In a move that sent shockwaves across the consumer electronics market in India, the Government of India’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced a new set of rules restricting the import of laptops, tablets, AIOs, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers.

The notice issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade lists out all the changes made to the import directives of the above-mentioned consumer electronics goods in the country. This move has come right before the start of the festival season in the country, which sees record sales of laptops and tablets.

What does the laptop import ban exactly mean?

The news has brought along several doubts and questions in the minds of consumers looking to get their hands on one of the now-restricted devices. So, here’s a detailed look at what the new regulations mean and how they could affect your next purchase –

The import of laptops, tablets, AIOs, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers is not banned in India altogether. Now, the entities willing to import these devices will now need a special license. These devices have been moved from being listed under the “Free” category of imported goods to “Restricted”. If you are someone who was looking to import a laptop from abroad as a part of a purchase on an e-commerce portal or via personal channels, then you are still free to do that. As stated in the notice, the import restrictions do not apply to the import of “1 Laptop, Tablet, All-in-one Personal Computer, or Ultra small form factor Computer, including those purchased from e-commerce portals, through post or courier.” However, you will still have to pay the applicable import duty fees. Lastly, if you are someone who is involved in the research and development/testing/benchmarking and evaluation/repair of the products that are all under the new regulations, then you are in luck! Given that you are able to provide proof of the fact that the product that you are importing is being used for one of the above-stated applications, then the import of 20 such items is still allowed! (Source: Directorate General of Foreign Trade) What does it mean for you?

There are a LOT more angles to this regulation change, which I believe are best left for the law professionals to understand. For now, I believe you should buckle yourself up for a price hike of laptops and tablets over the next few months.

Once the brands active in this space are able to get on some steady ground, you can expect the prices of most of the devices to stabilise or, rather drop down as well! This is because, as things stand, most manufacturers who do not have an active facility in India will now look to set up manufacturing bases in the country, bringing down the overall costs of the products and logistics

Budget Gaming Laptop Lenovo LOQ Announced With AI-Performance Chip For 73,000

August 01, 2023 at 03:47PM

Lenovo launches its budget-oriented LOQ gaming laptops, exclusively available on Flipkart. LOQ laptops offer advanced features including a MUX Switch, Lenovo's LA AI Chip, and NVIDIA RTX GPU. Lenovo aims to target budget-conscious gamers with its LOQ lineup, with prices starting at INR 73,990.

If you were one of those people who wondered where the latest Lenovo IdeaPad gaming laptops were then I believe I have the answer. Lenovo has introduced its brand new "LOQ" series of gaming laptops targeting budget gamers. Announced exclusively on Flipkart, LOQ is Lenovo's latest attempt to cater to the gaming community. The design cues and shared features with the well-regarded Legion series indicate a conscious effort to ease newcomers into Lenovo's gaming ecosystem.

Also read: Lenovo LOQ 151RH8 Review: Fantastic gaming performance at the cost of high surface temps

LOQ laptops, available in 15 and 16-inch variants, are equipped with either a 13th Gen Intel Core processor or an AMD Ryzen 7000 Series CPU, and offer up to NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU. The display's NVIDIA G-SYNC compatibility promises improved image quality, less screen tearing, and smoother motion during gameplay, but real-world testing will determine how well these claims hold up.

MUX Switch will come standard with the LOQ series, giving the users the maximum performance from their GPUs. The brand new Lenovo LA AI Chip onboard the laptop powers the Lenovo AI+ Engine. Which manages power and thermal performance during gaming sessions. Seems like a clever touch, but again, it's hard to judge its effectiveness without real-world tests.

Also read: Lenovo Yoga Book 9i looks so futuristic: Check all specifications and features

The Lenovo LOQ lineup, starting at INR 73,990, seems to be making a bid for the budget-conscious gamer. But with fierce competition in this segment, it remains to be seen whether these devices can make a mark. One model, the Lenovo LOQ 15IRH8, stands out with an Intel® Core™ i7-13620H processor, NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 4060 graphics, 16GB DDR5-5200 memory, and 512GB SSD storage.

In addition, every laptop in the Lenovo LOQ series is equipped with Super Rapid Charge, a feature that could offer, according to Lenovo, quicker charging times and extended battery life. The latter is something whose impact could only be fully tested on a long-term basis. The laptops also sport Lenovo's signature full-sized gaming keyboard, offering a 1.5mm key travel, and the option to light things up with a 4-zone RGB backlighting system.

I personally think if Lenovo could manage to bring an RTX 4050-powered LOQ gaming laptop at around ₹75,000, then it could shake up the budget laptop gaming segment.

Exclusive: HPs new AI-Powered Macbook Killer leaks - to cost under Rs 1 lakh

July 06, 2023 at 07:20PM

In an exclusive scoop, I have the information that HP is preparing to shake up the tech sector with a "Macbook killer." Leveraging their 33.8% market share (as per Q1 '23 IDC report), HP is reportedly readying a 15-inch Envy laptop aimed squarely at the content creators' community—an audacious bid to unseat the Apple MacBook Pro from its lofty perch.

My sources indicate that this device will not merely challenge but outdo Apple's offering, packing in features specifically tailored for the dynamic, hybrid lifestyle of modern creators. And the bombshell? It's expected to be priced under 1 lakh, substantially undercutting the MacBook Pro—a bold gambit that could send ripples through the market.

The new HP Envy is planning to score where the MacBook Pro couldn't. It will incorporate a touch screen, a glaring omission in Apple's premium laptop. Designed to support the ever-evolving demands of content creation, HP's move is a clear nod to the changing preferences of the creator community.

It is also clear from the leaked image that the laptop will have upward-firing speakers, a big trackpad, a full-size SD card slot, and a 360-degree hinge. There is also a good chance that the stylus will come included with the laptop itself. The laptop's keyboard will also feature a 60% layout, which a lot of creators and productivity enthusiasts prefer.

But that's not all. The new Envy laptop is rumored to be loaded with AI features aiming to enhance security, audio, video, and overall user experience. The standout is HP's Presence 2.0 technology, designed to enhance video calls by adjusting lighting conditions and reducing background noise—a handy feature for all the remote workers and freelancers out there.

Furthermore, the laptop is engineered to support heavy content creation and multitasking. But will it unthrone the much coveted Macbook Pro? I'll let you know soon once I get my hands on the device.

AMD Unveils Next-Gen Ryzen PRO 7040 Series Mobile and Desktop Processors

June 13, 2023 at 06:29PM

AMD has announced the launch of its new Ryzen PRO 7040 Series Mobile processors, raising the bar for x86 processor performance and efficiency in Windows 11 business laptops and mobile workstations. The company also unveiled the Ryzen PRO 7000 Series processors for desktops, bringing the power of "Zen 4" and AMD RDNA 2 integrated graphics to the professional desktop user segment.

The Ryzen PRO 7040 Series Mobile processors leverage AMD's "Zen 4" architecture and RDNA 3 integrated graphics to provide optimal performance for business applications. The processors also feature AMD PRO technologies and a dedicated AI engine on select models, named Ryzen AI. On the desktop side, the Ryzen PRO 7000 Series processors come with up to 12 high-efficiency "Zen 4" cores and up to 5.4 GHz boost frequency. These processors also feature RDNA 2 architecture-based integrated graphics, delivering impressive performance for professional workloads. The processors support the latest technologies, including DDR5 memory, PCIe Gen 5.0 storage, and ultra-fast Wi-Fi 6E.

In addition to performance and efficiency improvements, AMD's new processors offer enterprise-grade security features via AMD PRO technologies. These features include AMD Memory Guard, Secured-core PC, and chip-to-cloud security technology enabled by Microsoft Pluton.

The Ryzen PRO 7040 Series Mobile and 7000 Series Desktop processors are expected to be available in systems from leading PC vendors, including HP and Lenovo, starting this month.
