AMD unveils EPYC 8004 Siena CPUs: Zen 4c comes for telecom, networking and edge nodes

by
September 18, 2023 at 06:30PM

AMD, after having unveiled their 4th Gen EPYC processors last year, has further solidified its lineup with the introduction of the EPYC 8004 Series processors. This launch culminates the 4th Gen AMD EPYC CPU family, which until now had general purpose processors based on the Zen 4 microarchitecture, codenamed Genoa. AMD had previously unveiled Genoa-X processors which brought V-Cache technology to their EPYC lineup and now, the 8004 series is all about cost and power optimised processors targeted at edge nodes. AMD EPYC 8004 series, codenamed Sienna, is also based on the same Bergamo family but with core counts capped at 64 instead of 128.

AMD EPYC 8004 Processors

“The new EPYC 8004 Series processors extend AMD leadership in single socket platforms by offering excellent CPU energy efficiency in a package tuned to meet the needs of space and power-constrained infrastructure,” said Dan McNamara, senior vice president and general manager, Server Business, AMD. “AMD has delivered multiple generations of data centre processors that provide outstanding efficiency, performance, and innovative features. Now with our 4th Gen EPYC CPU portfolio complete, that leadership continues across a broad set of workloads – from enterprise and cloud, to intelligent edge, technical computing and more.”

AMD EPYC 8004 "Zen 4c" Processors

The new AMD EPYC 8004 processors have been built primarily for single-socket platforms. They boast of up to 64 “Zen 4c” cores coupled with 6 channels of DDR5 memory, all fitting on a much smaller footprint in the form of the new SP6 socket. The SP6 socket is meant for CPUs with 4844 pins which is significantly lesser than SP5 which has 6096 pins. As for physical footprint, the SP6 socket takes up the same amount of space as the SP3 socket i.e. 58.5 x 75.4 mm. The combination of these specs makes the new Sienna platform a good choice for applications that have restrictions on space and power consumption. Speaking of power consumption, the new EPYC 8004 processor family has a minimum configurable TDP of 70 Watts going all the way up to 255 Watts.

AMD EPYC 8004 Processors

The entire range of AMD EPYC 8004 processors are listed below:

AMD EPYC 8004 Series Processor SKU List with specifications

One of the application areas where the EPYC 8004 series is designed for is in edge deployments. These setups, often characterised by smaller server nodes, stand to gain substantially in terms of energy efficiency. Several major OEMs and partners have already rolled out solutions, specifically tuned to exploit the new EPYC 8004 processors' unique capabilities. Dell Technologies, for instance, has debuted with the PowerEdge C6615 server. Ericsson, working on telecom solutions for Cloud RAN computation acceleration, especially crucial in managing the deluge of mobile network traffic, is also coming out with solutions.

From silicon to cloud: CEO Pat Gelsinger shares Intels vision of AI everywhere

by
September 20, 2023 at 08:16AM

In a packed hall full of analysts and the world's media, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger flagged off what he referred to as the “AI PC” era during his opening keynote at the third edition of Intel Innovation event. Gelsinger demonstrated this with a hitherto unnamed (not to mention unreleased) laptop running on Intel’s Lunar Lake chip, estimated to arrive some time in the second half of 2024.

We are at Intel Innovation 2023, where Intel is going to showcase interesting ways AI is powering our today and tomorrow… Here’s Pat Gelsinger, CEO, Intel has started his opening keynote address#IntelInnovation #intel #ai #siliconomy @intel @IntelIndia @PGelsinger pic.twitter.com/5MN2Do8pbt

— Digit (@digitindia) September 19, 2023

This sneak peek into Intel’s platform showed how Audacity, a widely used open-source audio software, can generate a Taylor Swift-like song in a matter of seconds – proving how Intel’s about to launch end user devices like PCs and laptops that can run AI workloads locally without connecting to a cloud-based service.

Tipping his hat to the amazing work being done by the likes of Sam Altman at OpenAI and Jensen Huang at NVIDIA, powering the next set of AI breakthroughs, “The work they’re doing at the high end is really cool, as we move to trillion parameter models and beyond, this is amazing and breaking new science,” noted Gelsinger in his keynote address. “But I’ll tell you what’s even cooler if we put it in the hands of every human on earth,” he emphasized, which is essentially what Intel’s AI PC mission is all about.

Also read: Intel’s Sandra Rivera on future of AI, data centers and India’s tech moment

“AI represents a generational shift, giving rise to a new era of global expansion,” where computing is fundamental to enable a better future for all, according to Gelsinger. For developers, he reinforced how Intel is bringing AI capabilities across its hardware products and making it accessible through open, multi-architecture software solutions, helping them “create solutions to the world’s biggest challenges and to improve the life of every person on the planet.” AI is helping to drive “Siliconomy,” noted Gelsinger, a “growing economy enabled by the magic of silicon and software.” Silicon alone drives a $574 billion industry that in turn powers a global tech economy worth almost $8 trillion, according to Intel.

The work begins with silicon innovation. Intel’s five-nodes-in-four-years process development program is progressing well, Gelsinger said, with Intel 7 already in high-volume manufacturing, Intel 4 manufacturing-ready and Intel 3 on track for the end of this year. Gelsinger also showed an Intel 20A wafer with the first test chips for Intel’s Arrow Lake processor, which is destined for the client computing market in 2024. Intel 20A will be the first process node to include PowerVia, Intel’s backside power delivery technology, and the new gate-all-around transistor design called RibbonFET. Intel 18A, which also leverages PowerVia and RibbonFET, remains on track to be manufacturing-ready in the second half of 2024.

Another way Intel presses Moore’s Law forward is with new materials and new packaging technologies, like glass substrates – a breakthrough Intel announced this week. When introduced later this decade, glass substrates will allow for continued scaling of transistors on a package to help meet the need for data-intensive, high-performance workloads like AI and will keep Moore’s Law going well beyond 2030.

Intel also displayed a test chip package built with Universal Chiplet Interconnect Express (UCIe). Formed last year, the UCIe standard will allow chiplets from different vendors to work together, enabling new designs for the expansion of diverse AI workloads. The open specification is supported by more than 120 companies. The test chip combined an Intel UCIe IP chiplet fabricated on Intel 3 and a Synopsys UCIe IP chiplet fabricated on TSMC N3E process node. The chiplets are connected using embedded multi-die interconnect bridge (EMIB) advanced packaging technology. The demonstration highlights the commitment of TSMC, Synopsys and Intel Foundry Services to support an open standard-based chiplet ecosystem with UCIe.

Welcome to the AI PC era

AI is about to get more personal, too. “AI will fundamentally transform, reshape and restructure the PC experience – unleashing personal productivity and creativity through the power of the cloud and PC working together,” Gelsinger said. “We are ushering in a new age of the AI PC.”

This new PC experience arrives with the upcoming Intel Core Ultra processors, code-named Meteor Lake, featuring Intel’s first integrated neural processing unit, or NPU, for power-efficient AI acceleration and local inference on the PC. Gelsinger confirmed Core Ultra also will launch Dec. 14.

Intel Core Ultra represents an inflection point in Intel’s client processor roadmap: It’s the first client chiplet design enabled by Foveros packaging technology. In addition to the NPU and major advances in power-efficient performance thanks to Intel 4 process technology, the new processor brings discrete-level graphics performance with onboard Intel Arc graphics.

On stage, Gelsinger showed an array of new AI PC use cases, and Jerry Kao, chief operating officer of Acer, gave a sneak peek at an upcoming Acer laptop powered by Core Ultra. “We’ve been co-developing with Intel teams a suite of Acer AI applications to take advantage of the Intel Core Ultra platform,” Kao said, “developing with the OpenVINO toolkit and co-developed AI libraries to bring the hardware to life.”

Empowering the developers

Intel announced the general availability of the Intel Developer Cloud, aimed at helping developers accelerate AI using the latest Intel hardware and software innovations – including Intel Gaudi2 processors for deep learning – and provides access to the latest Intel hardware platforms, present and future.

Also read: NVIDIA, Reliance join hands to advance AI in India: LLMs in India regional languages coming soon

Additionally, Intel highlighted the 2023.1 release of the Intel Distribution of OpenVINO toolkit, the company’s AI inferencing and deployment runtime of choice for developers on client and edge platforms which includes pre-trained models optimized for integration across operating systems and different cloud solutions, including many generative AI models, such as the Llama 2 model from Meta. Intel also revealed Project Strata, the development of an edge-native software platform by 2024 with modular building blocks, premium service and support offerings.

“AI going forward must deliver more access, scalability, visibility, transparency and trust to the whole ecosystem,” Gelsinger said.

iPhone 16 Pro might get new Tetraprism 5x optical zoom from iPhone 15 Pro Max: Ming-Chi Kuo

by
September 19, 2023 at 05:07PM

Apple recently unveiled the most awaited smartphone series of the year, the iPhone 15 series. The iPhone 15 series includes four smartphone models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and the high-end iPhone 15 Pro Max. While a tetraprism lens with up to 5x optical zoom is currently exclusive to the iPhone 15 Pro Max smartphone model, this feature is expected to expand to both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max next year, according to a well-renowned supply chain analyst.

In a medium post on September 18, supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said, “Both iPhone 16 Pro Max and the iPhone 16 Pro are expected to feature tetraprism telephoto cameras.”

Also read: Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max sees high demand, outpacing last model: Report

 Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max's 5x

Kuo also mentioned that if Apple maintains the higher specification for the lens, it will likely raise the entry barrier for Genius, Apple’s second-largest lens supplier, next year.

“It suggests that Largan is more likely to maintain its exclusive or primary supplier status for the tetraprism lens next year,” he added.

Also read: Apple iPhone 15 Series: What You Need to Know Before You Buy

 Apple iPhone 15 Pro Max's 5x

According to a report by MacRumors, the iPhone 16 Pro model is expected to feature a larger 6.3-inch display. The current iPhone 15 Pro features a 6.1-inch display. This change will likely help to provide additional internal space for a tetraprism lens.

On September 17, while sharing thoughts on the iPhone 15 series’ first weekend pre-order, Kuo claimed that the demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max “is robust”, outpacing last year’s iPhone 14 Pro Max smartphone model. He also said that demand for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus is “roughly on par with last year.”

Moreover, the demand for the iPhone 15 Pro is lower as compared to last year, with one possible reason being a shift of more premium users to the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year. According to Kuo, wait times for the iPhone 15 Pro Max are significantly longer than for other models, but not just due to high demand.

Google Slides gets new live pointers feature: heres how to use it

by
September 19, 2023 at 09:59AM

Google has announced a new ‘live pointers’ feature for its presentation app Google Slides. This new feature aims to boost collaboration in Google Slides. It allows multiple people to see each other’s mouse pointers in real-time.

“To boost collaboration in Google Slides, we’re introducing live pointers, a new feature that allows you and your colleagues to see each other’s mouse pointers in real-time,” the tech giant said in a Workspace Updates blogpost on September 18.

Also read: How to use Google Docs, Slides and Sheets in Offline mode

Google Slides

With this update, co-creators can easily point out specific text or visual elements within a Slide in order to highlight important information and content.

The live pointers feature will help to build connections when you're collaborating in real-time with others.

If you haven't received this feature yet, just wait a little more as it is currently rolling out.

Google Slides

How to use live pointers in Google Slides?

This feature is off by default, so you have to enable this feature by following the below steps.

Step 1. Open Google Slides.

Step 2. Go to View.

Step 3. From the drop-down menu, select the Live pointers option.

Step 4. Then click on show my pointer.

Alternatively, you can turn the feature on by using the pointer icon in the toolbar.

It’s important to note that live pointers will remain visible across all slides until you turn them off.

To hide collaborator pointers for the current session, navigate to the present mode, or go to View > Live pointers > show collaborator pointers.

In our opinion, as the new live pointers feature facilitates real-time collaboration among multiple users working on the same presentation by allowing collaborators to see each other's mouse pointers, it makes it easier to communicate and coordinate while editing or presenting Google Slides.

Earlier this month, Google introduced new zoom keyboard shortcuts for Google Slides on web to help you zoom in, zoom out, or scale to 100 per cent. Additionally, you can now smoothly zoom in or out in Slides using the trackpad or mouse wheel with a modifier key (cmd/ctrl), making it easier to control your view of Slides.

Similar to the existing filters – Commute, Energize, Focus, Relax, and Workout –  selecting multiple filters will give you a mix of all the selected filters.

The new mood filters are starting to appear on mobile apps and the web client, but have not yet been widely rolled out. The usual timeline for such feature rollouts is about 2-3 weeks.

Last month, YouTube introduced a new personalised music discovery feature for YouTube Music. According to the company, the Samples tab is a seamless feed of short-form video segments to get you to your new favourite music. Powered by the world’s largest catalogue of music videos, this personalised feed explores the depths and breadth of the YouTube Music library so that there’s always something new to listen to. Moreover, with each sample, you can quickly add the song to your collection, share it with friends, create your next favourite playlist, kick off a great new radio station, watch the full video, visit the album page, or even use the song to create your own Short. And for artists, the Samples tab provides another way to find a new audience and build a community on YouTube.

While the messaging platform already allowed group calls of up to 32 participants in the past updates, users were only able to select 15 contacts while initiating a call.

The 31-person group calling feature, along with minor improvements to the calls tab, is currently available to a limited number of beta testers on Android, according to the report.

In our opinion, the ability to initiate group calls with up to 31 participants will allow for more extensive and inclusive group conversations. This can be especially useful for business meetings, virtual family gatherings, or connecting with a larger circle of friends.

Last week, it was reported that WhatsApp had started testing a new video avatar calling feature. This feature is expected to allow users to replace themselves with avatars during video calls. Given that WhatsApp is owned by Meta, it's worth noting that Meta introduced the real-time avatar calling feature for Instagram and Messenger in July. Hence, it was only a matter of time before WhatsApp would incorporate such a feature on the platform.

With this feature, WhatsApp intends to enhance user privacy by concealing their real appearance with an avatar, all while enabling them to participate in the video call.

Also read: WhatsApp will soon make sharing original quality photos & videos easier

 WhatsApp

This new feature is expected to add a fun and personalised touch to video calls, making interactions more expressive. It will also likely help users when they are not camera-ready and want a third option between camera-off and camera-on.

To check whether the feature is enabled for your account, try to make a video call to see if an avatar button is available within the calling screen.

According to the report, WhatsApp has dedicated substantial time and effort to improve the user experience when using this feature. When users opt for the video avatar mode, it will replicate their facial movements and expressions in real-time, adding a layer of realism to their interactions. By choosing to use this mode, users acknowledge and accept the privacy notice explaining how their information is utilised to enhance the service and ensure its protection. It's essential to highlight that even when using the video avatar mode, calls remain end-to-end encrypted.

Given that WhatsApp is owned by Meta, it's worth noting that Meta introduced the real-time avatar calling feature for Instagram and Messenger in July. Therefore, it's possible for WhatsApp to incorporate such a feature in the future.

Microsoft Edge may get Vertical view for split screen feature: Heres why

by
September 12, 2023 at 03:17PM

Microsoft has reportedly started testing a new ‘Vertical View’ for Microsoft Edge's split screen feature. For those who are unaware, the split screen allows users to run two web pages under one tab.

The new vertical view for the Split screen feature was first spotted by X (formerly Twitter) user Leopeva64. Posting the screenshots of the new layout, the user wrote, “Microsoft has added a new ‘Vertical view’ to Edge's Split screen feature (Canary).”

Microsoft has added a new "Vertical view" to Edge's Split screen feature (Canary):https://t.co/HFp06U25OD .https://t.co/rkrOtrPUQO pic.twitter.com/3Q3KMIHZWN

— Leopeva64 (@Leopeva64) September 10, 2023

According to Windows Central, the new Vertical view is expected to provide Edge users with two layout options while leveraging the Split screen feature: the horizontal layout with tabs arranged side by side or the vertical layout with the tabs stacked on each other.

Also read: Microsoft Edge users can now use Plug-In free Skype

 Microsoft Edge

Why vertical view matters for Edge user experience

This will likely improve navigation significantly by allowing users to switch between a vertical and horizontal layout by selecting a three-dot button. Users could also be able to resize them by dragging the divider, as per the report.

Meanwhile, Microsoft is also reportedly working to add a new ‘More option’ menu to the Split screen feature. This menu will likely feature two options: one that could allow users to open a link on their current tab and another that opens links in a secondary tab.

Last month, Microsoft announced that users of the Microsoft Edge sidebar can now access their apps and sites directly from their Windows 10 desktop. As an opt-in experience in Windows 10, users can attach the sidebar to their Windows desktop by clicking a ‘popout’ icon near the base of the sidebar in the browser. This enables a side-by-side experience that works with any Windows app including Microsoft Edge itself. “Users enjoy streamlined access to the same set of powerful AI tools and web-based services, including Bing Chat, without launching a browser window, enhancing productivity regardless of where they are in Windows,” the tech giant said.

Google Messages may soon get WhatsApp-like multi-device support

by
September 12, 2023 at 02:22PM

Google is reportedly working on a new WhatsApp-like feature for its instant messaging platform Google Messages that is expected to allow users to access messages and RCS chats across multiple devices. For those who are unaware, RCS stands for Rich Communication Services and is basically a messaging system that is considered richer than traditional SMS.

Currently, Google Messages limits message reading, sending, and receiving exclusively to users’ primary phone where the app is installed. However, a workaround exists where users can access Messages for Web through a mobile browser on another device. Now, Google is apparently removing this restriction and might soon allow users to use the Google Messages app itself across multiple devices, reports Android Authority.

 Google

According to strings of code found in Google Messages by feature hunter AssembleDebug, Google will likely use the users’ phone number and Google account to set up Google Messages across multiple devices. Given that RCS chats are associated with the users’ phone number, which Google validates when opt-in for the feature in Google Messages, this seems reasonable.

Users should be able to use Google Messages on additional devices like their backup phone or Android tablet once Google introduces the new multi-device feature without physically switching their primary SIM into those gadgets.

It might work like WhatsApp's multi-device connectivity feature. Users of WhatsApp can sync messages between four devices. How Google will respond to this and whether there will be a restriction on the number of devices from which users can access Google Messages are both unknown, the report said.

Last month, Google reportedly started working to add support for Satellite Connectivity in Google Messages. The information came from X (formerly Twitter) user Neil Rahmouni. “Looks like Google Messages is indeed preparing to add support for Satellite Connectivity. They've added UIs for conversations and SOS messages using satellite connection,” Rahmouni wrote.

WhatsApp may soon let you message people using other apps: Heres why

by
September 11, 2023 at 08:59AM

Meta-owned instant messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly working on a third-party chats feature. This support for chat interoperability is expected to allow other people to connect with users on WhatsApp even if they don’t have a WhatsApp account. As this feature is currently under development, it is not ready for beta testers, as per the report.

According to a report by a known WhatsApp tipster publication, WABetaInfo, the messaging platform is working to meet new European Union regulations by adding chat interoperability support in an upcoming app update.

The European Union has recently agreed on a significant competition reform called the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This reform will impose strict rules on major tech companies, requiring them to allow users to communicate across different apps.

WhatsApp is among the companies that must adhere to the new regulations outlined in the DMA. This is because WhatsApp qualifies as a gatekeeper service due to its status as a large tech platform with a substantial user base, meeting the DMA's criteria. In the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.19.8 update, available on the Google Play Store, it has been discovered that WhatsApp is actively working on complying with these new regulations.

Also read: WhatsApp may soon let users disable instant video message feature

WhatsApp

For the new third-party chats feature, WhatsApp is expected to add a new section dedicated to the new regulations. As it is in development, the section appears empty and is not accessible to users.

In order to deliver its interoperability service in the European Union, WhatsApp has six months to modify the app to the new European standards. It is still unknown if this feature will eventually be available in countries other than the European Union.

The third-party chat support will likely enable individuals using other platforms to reach out to WhatsApp users, even if they don't have a WhatsApp account.

According to the report, while this broader network is expected to improve communication with people who use different messaging apps, the new feature might also raise concerns about end-to-end encryption when receiving a message from users who don’t use WhatsApp. Also, users might have the choice to opt out in the future, as outlined in Article 7 of the regulations.

Google Drives new feature lets you lock files easily: Heres how

by
September 08, 2023 at 02:49PM

Google has announced a new feature for its file storage and synchronisation service Google Drive. The new feature makes it easier for users to lock files in Google Drive.

“We’re adding the option to lock Drive files by right-clicking the file, selecting ‘File information’, and clicking ‘Lock’,” the tech giant said in a Workspace Updates  blogpost.

 Google Drive

According to Google, locking a file makes sure that reviewers can’t change a file. When the feature is enabled, edits, comments and suggestions can't be added to locked documents.

Also read: How to make the most of Google Drive

 Google Drive

Moreover, the new update simplifies and streamlines the process of restricting files in Google Drive, which was previously only available through the Google Drive API or file approvals.

In our opinion, the option to easily lock files in Google Drive will help prevent accidental edits, ensuring the authenticity of files.

How to lock a file in Google Drive:

In order to lock a Drive file, you must have edit-access to the Drive file. If you have that follow the below steps:

Step 1: Hover over a file in Drive, then right-click into the context menu. Step 2: Then select the File information option. Step 3: After that, choose Lock and confirm that you actually want to lock the document by selecting Lock.

It’s important to note that this new option to lock files in Google Drive is currently being rolled out to all Google Workspace customers. So if you don't get this feature, you have to wait a little more.

Last month, Google added drag & drop to Google Drive multi-instance support on large-screen Android devices, enabling users to quickly share files and folders between two different accounts. Also, in order to make it easier to manage shared drive files and eliminate the manual effort of removing items in the trash folder, the tech giant added the ability to empty the entire trash folder of a shared drive.
